Our Opinion on Local Landscaping in Metro East IL
Our opinion is simple: most Metro East landscaping projects should start with drainage, access, and maintenance before color, stone, and curb appeal. Pretty work does not stay pretty if water is running toward the foundation, beds are too hard to maintain, or the material choice does not fit Southern Illinois weather.
Drainage Comes Before Decoration
When we look at a yard in Belleville, O'Fallon, Edwardsville, or the surrounding Metro East area, the first question is not what stone color looks best. It is where the water goes. If downspouts dump into planting beds, if mulch washes across a sidewalk, or if low spots hold water after a storm, those issues need to be handled before cosmetic upgrades.
That is why our landscaping work and landscape cleanup projects often start with grading, removal, bed cleanup, and practical layout decisions.
Keep the Design Maintainable
A good-looking yard that takes too much effort will usually fall behind. Our preference is clean bed edges, sensible plant spacing, durable mulch or rock, and access for mowing, trimming, and seasonal cleanup. If a homeowner wants a low-maintenance property, the design should support that from day one.
- Use bed shapes that can be edged cleanly.
- Keep plants away from siding, fences, and AC units.
- Choose mulch, rock, and edging based on water flow and upkeep, not just color.
- Leave access for repairs, drainage work, and future outdoor projects.
Phase the Work Instead of Guessing
For many homeowners, the smartest move is to clean up the property first, then add hardscape or planting improvements in phases. A clean yard makes it easier to see what the property actually needs. It also keeps the budget from getting burned on work that has to be moved later.
